Original Music and Sound Design by Radium Audio

Filmed on location in West Cornwall, Swami's short film profiles multiple British and European longboard champion Sam Bleakley: surfer, explorer and writer. An insightful glimpse into a surfer's state of mind, travel wanderlust and the ultimate draw back home, Radium is invited to create the soundtrack ...

Watching the film for the first time, we are completely absorbed by the honesty and simplicity of Sam Bleakley’s narrative, set against the cinematic feel of the beautifully shot and edited film footage. Listening to Sam speaking about the mercurial qualities of the aquatic environment and watching the surf sequences, we are struck by the place of inner stillness, strength, and kinetic wisdom from which he seems to engage with the front lines of the oceanic world. So we imbue those qualities at the very heart of the sound and music we create, evolving a score of panoramic serenity laced with a subtle oceanic narrative, sonically opening the door into Sam’s world, inviting all of us to take a step across the threshold …

… moving on from Macro Kingdom, we pass through the portal of a microscope to venture into the Micro Empire ... surrounding us … inhabiting us ... stranger than fiction … molecular machinations and mitochondrial warfare … a heartstopping, subcellular epic … a truly microcinematic experience …

Radium collaborates again with talented visual artist Clemens Wirth. Clemens says:

“as an enthusiast for little things, I wanted to go deeper than the macro universe, so I found myself hanging on the eyepiece of a microscope. The real challenge was definitely the small depth of field in microscopy. It’s really fascinating how detailed this tiny world is, and unbelievable how much is going on in only one little water drop.”

When we see Clem's initial cuts, it feels like we're watching an intricate saga of life and death, the battle for survival and dominance raging unceasingly. We evolve the sonic narrative with some delicately crafted sound design highlighting the kinetic plots and intrigues playing out. Given that we've worked hard to supplement our own internal library of bespoke created sounds over the past few months, we have a wealth of fantastic source material to sculpt and process including live insect recordings from a recent studio session, live lion roars captured on location in Africa, and a variety of hair and beauty products from our local supermarket miked up and satisfyingly squelched to elicit some wonderful gloopy textures. Underpinning this tale of microbiological ambition and strife we craft a gritty, dark, electronic score, rising through an aspiration of swelling strings and vocal textures to a climactic melee ... then dispersing ... strategically ... to fight another day ...

Radium's client WeAreSeventeen asks us to create a sonically branded soundscape for Bauer Radio, to reflect the sheer diversity of their radio offer whilst retaining a very human warmth. We shape up a score and take a light and quirky approach to layering in our sound effects, crafting a microcosm of emotional connectedness with a liberal dash of sunshine to make us all smile ... just a little ... while we listen ...

Original Music and Sound Design by Radium Audio

Radium is commissioned by agency JWT to work with director Jon Yeo to create the soundtrack for the new Trident Neon Fu tv commercial. When we see the initial storyboards with the japanese influenced fight sequence, we imagine the thunder of traditional Japanese war drums pounding underneath a highly stylized and futuristic sound design action narrative, a sonic infusion of the ancient into the now, a Neon Fu acoustic flavorburst...

See below for

Indepth narrative
Soundfiles - electronic vs live taiko drums
Short flim from the taiko recording session

As we work on the soundtrack, everyone loves the result from our standard studio production tools and instruments with sampled taiko, but we can't escape the feeling that only live taiko drums will really do the project justice. So we ask around, and we are put in touch witih Joji Hirota, a highly respected japanese taiko artist, and arrange to go along to one of his rehearsals with his troupe. When we see and hear them in action, we know immediately that we have to bring the intensity of the live taiko drums into the Neon Fu project, and so we invite Joji to a live recording session to recreate and reinforce our studio drums on taiko.

As well as Joji's own drums, we also bring in the 54" hybrid taiko bass drum which was featured in the Harry Potter movies - it's so massive that we struggle to actually get it through the doors into the recording studio. It takes a little while to find the correct positions for the microphone recordings to capture the full sonic range of the drums without distortion from the sheer intensity of volume. Joji quickly gets familiar with our track, and we're all a little awestruck by the raw power of his performance and his command of his art. When we edit in the live taiko and compare the new track to the previous, we can really hear and feel the strength of the percussive boost we've injected into the sonic aether of our Neon Fu world.

Listen to the difference between the taiko samples and the live taiko recordings

Original Score and Sound Design by Radium Audio

When Director David Robb at Sky Creative asks Radium to create the soundtrack to Sky's dedicated Formula 1 channel new advert, we are eager to immerse ourselves in the task of sonically channelling the sheer heart-racing adrenaline of the Formula 1 experience.

Because Formula 1 racing carries its own highly iconic sounds, we opt to recreate and augment these with some additional elements, then actually fold them into the original score, so that we have a music track which draws on the hornet-like voices of the cars themselves, exploring every twist, turn, scream and roar the engines make. Layering in an upswell of cinematic strings, epic sound design and bold, dramatic beats, we turbo-boost the final track across the finish line for that goosebump effect ...
